Driving a sustainable route to open access
We’re at the forefront of negotiating national transformational agreements (TAs) that are changing scholarly publishing for both access and publishing and delivering open access options at scale whilst managing the transition to open in a sustainable way.
What is a transformational agreement?
A transformational agreement is when a consortium or institution enters into a partnership with a publisher to enable a large-scale transition towards open access.
TAs allow researchers unlimited read access to a portfolio of journals, plus funding to cover article publication charges (APC) when choosing to publish open access.
What does a transformational agreement look like?
Whilst each TA is unique, there are some commonalities shared by many, for example:
1. The agreement term is set.
2. The agreements combine read access and open access publishing.
3. Many include open access publishing in fully gold and hybrid journals.
4. Most include a discount to the consortium or institution on the APC.
5. They cover research articles and reviews unless otherwise specified.
Where are Wiley’s transformational agreements?
We’ve negotiated and signed a number of national and institutional TAs that cover authors at various locations around the globe.
*Hybrid OA: Most of Wiley's subscription-based journals offer a hybrid open access option, allowing authors to publish openly in their journal of choice.
**Gold OA: Journals where every article is published open access.
Authors can easily check funding eligibility through a Wiley TA, or if their institution has a Wiley Open Access Account (WOAA), which can help cover some, if not all, of the APC, here.
If authors covered under any of the transitional agreements in place at Wiley have any questions, they can contact AccountDashboardSupport@wiley.com for help.
How do transformational agreements impact your journal?
![]() | There are clear advantages to publishing open access content across readership, citations, and Altmetric attention scores.a) 3x downloads of open access articles compared to subscription articles b) Open access articles cited nearly twice as much compared to subscription articles c) 4.5x as much Altmetric attention as subscription articles
![]() | Your journal may benefit from increased readership, as more content may be published open access. In addition, researchers at any TA-participating institutions can read, cite and share your journal content.
![]() | Open access publishing is broadening out in scope, covering subjects that traditionally have lower levels of APC funding.
![]() | Transformational agreements comply with policy and funder mandates that favor the transition to large-scale open access publishing.
![]() | There is no additional administration. Your authors don’t need to arrange their APC payments, as they are paid centrally by the relevant institution. |
